Music is the heart of MCPA. Whether a participant has never touched an instrument or played for decades, our music program meets them where they are.

What music looks like at MCPA

  • Group vocal ensemble – familiar songs, new songs, harmony, breath, and laughter
  • Instrumental exploration – acoustic guitar, piano, drums, percussion, ukulele, and electronic keyboards
  • One-on-one lessons – individualized coaching on voice or instrument for participants who want to go deeper
  • Ensemble rehearsals – preparing for seasonal performances at MCPA and community venues
  • Music therapy techniques – used selectively to support memory, mood, mobility and communication

Why music?

Music reaches places words can’t. For adults living with dementia, stroke or progressive neurological conditions, melody and rhythm stay accessible long after other language falters. For participants dealing with isolation, a weekly ensemble becomes family.

Our staff includes musicians with classical, jazz, folk and gospel backgrounds. Participants sing in English, Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Hebrew, and many other languages, reflecting the rich diversity of Minnesota’s communities.
